Tales of the Twilight
From earliest times people must have gathered in the twilight of the day to tell stories around a fire. It’s a song about stories and the power of stories.
One May Morning
Much of modern life celebrates the ‘winner’. This one champions the knight who is always second best. The verse about the horse is very much inspired by our cob, Jacob.
State of Nature
The Icelandic volcano, Eyjafjallajökull, seemed to affect a lot of people in 2010. This was a gentle reminder that nature isn’t always kind.
Mirror of Dorian Grey in Reverse
A song with a very long title, I started to notice that my ‘mind’s eye’ vision of myself didn’t match that which I saw in the morning. Deep down don’t we all feel eighteen?
In Firelight Glow
The Summer Solstice on 21st June is one of the greatest (and fun) of the Pagan celebrations of the wheel of the year.
Lost Soul
I wrote this song about Syd Barrett only 19 days before he died on 7th July 2006. I’ve been a Pink Floyd/Syd Barrett fan for most of my life. Amanda and Sam persuaded me to finally record it recently, it was intended to ponder what Syd might be doing now if he had continued in music.
Daze of Nostalgia
It seems to be an affliction that affects a certain age bracket (that I’m probably in) but I’m always reminded of the saying by Dennis Norden that “Nostalgia ain’t what it used to be.”
Equinox
A festival around 21st September, that I felt was often overlooked. It’s a time that signals change ether in education or new job but also many other ways.
Water of the Moon
The term Lunacy came from Lunar or moon watching, something that fits in with the pagan idea of following the natural cycles. As we are made up of a large percentage water and the moon governs the tides, I was never surprised that we feel the ‘pull of the moon.’
Chasing Clouds
Sitting in the Princess Alice one night Steve McCormick commented that it wasn’t possible that a song could be written around the idea ‘when butterflies attack’. So I wrote a verse. Steve raised his eyebrows and said I should go away and write the rest. At the time he was about to release his album “When Butterflies Attack”.
Suburban Fox
In the days when we had an allotment and kept chickens and ducks, this one was written after a particular favorite white duck was taken by a fox. While I spent nearly three hours following the feather trail I had the rudimentary version of this song in my head.
Green Knight
A song of winter and the story of Gawain & the Green Knight, which fascinated me for as long as I can remember.
Wild Wood
This was written while riding Jacob on a particularly windy day in Yearby Woods. Jacob is often soothed by singing and this chorus tends to calm him.
New Moon Rising
An oddity as this song was written for Sam to sing in ‘Blue Sun’ as “Blue Sun Rising”. Along the way it metamorphosed into ‘New Moon’ but I still love to hear Sam’s soaring vocal.
The Crow
The ‘Crow Tribe’ were a band of self named people who helped to set up the standing stone circle near Masham in Yorkshire. From there they moved to the Yorkshire Museum of Farming to build an Iron Age Settlement. This song marked an end of an era as the ‘crows flew away…’.
